These traditional Xhosa baskets have been woven for Design Afrika for almost 20 years by the weavers of the Masizame Women’s Project in Coffee Bay, South Africa. These baskets are traditionally used by the Xhosa women to carry food etc in. They manage to carry these fairly large baskets by skillfully balancing them on their heads and sometimes walking very far distances. A slight indentation is purposefully woven into the base of the basket to mould to the shape of the head. This project is a wonderful initiative, created to provide much needed employment for the women in rural areas as well as to preserve the rich culture of the Xhosa people through their traditional craft.
